The Struggle for Social Welfare

Introduction to Sociological Evaluation of Contemporary Issue

The True Cost is one of the 2015 documentary films, which had focused on fast fashion. Through the film, the director has tried to develop and focus on different aspects of the garment industry from the production channel. The film tried to explore the real-life facts of the low-wage workers in developing countries. Through this, consumerism along with the mass media also got examined which ultimately is linked with global capitalism. From the sociological perspective, the director through this film has tried to show that despite the garment manufacturing industry is one of the three-trillion dollar industry, the countries’ working conditions are very poor (Ali1, Kevin, & Tina , 2012).

Besides, working in those conditions with very less salary have already complicated the living standards among the workers. This way, it also became difficult for the workers in demanding their rights. Through the documentary, the sufferings of the workers and how the existence of a monopoly in the country have increased the price of the cotton. How such incidents caused many farmers in committing the suicides, especially those who have lost their land and cannot pay for the higher prices of the seeds that have been well portrayed (Baranowski, 2019). In this context, the problem that had been highlighted through the documentary is the socio-economic problem, which will be discussed from the perspective of the media industry.

Critical Discussion on Sociological Evaluation of Contemporary Issue

The advent of the fashion industry has made the farmers in the developing country to get suffered at a higher amount due to increased demand for the pure cotton and also along with that the price rates of the cotton. This can be stated as one of the contemporary sociological issues in the developing country from the context of the media institution. The fashion industry from the context of the media industry can be considered as one of the most polluting industries where now it is consuming around 500 percent more of the cotton than two decades ago (Granovetter, 2005). Through the documentary, the horrendous environmental damage, which has been resulted from the massive cotton industrial growth, has also been well portrayed. Particularly in India, it has been found that many chemicals have got dumped on the water especially in developing countries like India which had polluted the entire environment. As per the argument by Lamont (2017) the fashion industry is ultimately hampering the lifestyle of the cheap laborers, which have been reflected through the documentary.

Some of the research pieces of evidence highlight that nowadays, the average American throws around 82 pounds of the textile wastages every year that is 11 million tonnes in total. Through the documentary, how the factory workers were confronted every day with the hot and chemical-ridden work environment (Hollywoodreporter, 2015). Hence, the sufferings of the cheap laborers in developing countries as one of the socio-economic issues have been reflected through the documentary. Through the True cost documentary, it has been critically observed that today’s Indian structure based on corporate self-governance is inadequate in protecting the workers and hence the consumer capitalism itself needs to be rethought again. Through the film, the health of the laborers and how it is being affected from a daily perspective have been highlighted (Bertossi, 2020).

In this context, it will be better from the perspective of the media organization to develop a socio-economic theory with the help of which the socialization can be well explained along with the effect on the self-development. Through the theory, the formation of the self and how society is being influenced can be highlighted. The social-economic theory that is commonly needed in this regard is the classical theoretical tradition, which is one of the important concerns of the sociological theory (truecostmovie, 2020). In this context, it can be stated that keeping in mind the legal rules and the regulations, it is important for the individuals to involve themselves in interactionism, dramaturgy, and phenomenological sociology here the individuals should possess certain individual human rights, which is necessary for the society to undergo progress.

This concept is being theorized by George Herbert Mead who has described this concept as one of the effective outcomes of the collaborative joint action. On the contrary, the authors like Baranowski (2019) have argued the importance of the engaged theory which is defined as one of the effective approaches based on which the complexities in the social life can be understood well. In this context, the theory on social constructionism can be well highlighted where the individuals can be able to develop the human potentialities within themselves and slowly can be able to learn the culture. Hence, the best reply to the true cost is the social exchange theory through which the interactions between the individuals can be understood well without considering the looks and the appearances of the individuals or that of the social status (Granovetter, 2005).

Hence, it can be stated through social interactions, the social networks between the employers, job flow, and the employees can be easily understandable. Hence as a whole, it can be stated that social networking is important especially for the labor class and hence through this, economic flexibility can be attained. Along with this, social networking turns out to be important based on which higher productivity can be attained on which skill and employment are shaped effectively. However, in addition to this, the aspect of both of the professional ethics along with the monitoring is adequately important to attain the organizational goals in a reliable way (Bertossi, 2020). The immigrants who are skilled enough should be also be provided with adequate human rights and certain authority to speak out about the problems they often face. Through this, the counseling of the mental structure of the human being can be easily detected. It can only be possible through the provisioning of the “Skilled Worker Programme” where the unemployment issue can be understood easily (Hollywoodreporter, 2015).

The reason behind implementing this theory since, through unemployment, only complexity in the experiences can be found which gets complicated through class position, cultural contexts, and the type of gender. Hence, an effective form of employment counseling is necessary for the unemployed individuals where the primary focus would involve focusing on the psychological development of the individual and at the same time assist the client in the development of the skills both in the vocationally relevant areas and in conducting the job search (Granovetter, 2005).

The employment counseling would be more concerned in helping the individuals in accessing the resources, which they need for the generation of gainful employment and is termed as one of the solid-person environment fit. As per Brooke (2015), social integration is a common form of social connectedness that reflects the connectedness to the community agencies and the community colleagues. It helps in fostering the social connection, which ultimately helps in the creation of politics through which the factors can be addressed in a better way. Hence, in this aspect, the social structure turns out to be important for the labor class who was the most suffered as being reflected through the True Cost documentary (Ali1, Kevin, & Tina , 2012).

Through the entire discussion, interdisciplinary co-operation is needed for the laborers who are the most suffered class. The thing about "The True Cost" is that Morgan is not trying to tell us not to buy clothing. He is saying that we should not enable the cycle of mass production, consumption, and disposal on which companies like Topshop and H&M are built (truecostmovie, 2020). In this context, the theoretical perspective on functionalism turns out to be important where the primary function is the social stability which is required for the development of a strong society along with adequate socialization and social integration which is important besides social stability (Granovetter, 2005). Society’s social institutions perform effective functions to ensure social stability where the slow change is desirable, however, the rapid social change threatens the social order.

Conclusion on Sociological Evaluation of Contemporary Issue

To conclude, symbolic interactionism views the social problems from the perspective of the common people. The application of this particular aspect is the involvement of the abilities, which will ultimately recognize the troubles and can be able to find out the root cause of that. This in turn helps in emphasizing social equality and suggests far-reaching social changes, which is needed in achieving a better society. Hence, here special techniques are important, through which better future interactions can be easily symbolized along with addressing certain social problems.
